RESIDENTS DIRECT ALL-STARS Local coaches to lead provincial soccer teams A JOINT player development committee of B.C. senior and youth soccer associations has announced the appointment of seven North Shore residents to various coaching positions with B.C. all-star teams. The appointments include North Vancouver’s Vince Alvano who will coach the B.C. under-18 boys’ all-star team. Alvano coached the 1986 B.C. under-18 team to a second-place finish at the national all-star championships in Quebec and is presently serving his second term as commissioner of the B.C. high school soccer program. : He also teaches at Sutherland School, home of the 1986 B.C. high school soccer champions. Alvano will be assisted by Gary Knihnitsky of Burnaby, head coach of the 1986 under-16 squad that finished second in the national tournament held in Calgary. E we: us 3 ‘ a VINCE ALVANO...to coach B.C. under-18 boys’ all-star team. Maurice Edward, also of North Vancouver, has been appointed team manager. The boys’ under-18 team will take part in the nationai all-star championships - to be held in British Columbia from August 2 to 7, 1987 and the Pacific Coast tournament next May. The B.C. Youth Soccer Associa- tion will not form an under-16 boys’ team next year as it has done in the past. Instead, the youth body will assemble an under-15 side to compete nationally and to coincide with recent CSA changes in the age designations for national competitions. (The national all-star tournaments are designed to feed players into the various national teams that will compete interna- tionally.) Head coach of B.C.’s under-15 team will be North Vancouver's Bob Buchan. Buchan previously coached on a provincial level in 1983 when he was assigned the under-16 boys. Jim Dunnett of West Vancouver will assist Buchan and Jim Phair, also of North Vancouver, will manage the team. The under-13 boys will also play in the 1987 Pacific Coast tourna- ment and in the national under-15 all-star championships scheduled to be held in Nova Scotia from August I$ to 21. athletes SEVEN NORWESTERS athletes were honored at the B.C. Athletics Annual Awards banquet held Nov. 22 in Richmond. After competing against athletes from all over the province in track meets from May to August, Jeff Sharma, 10, Julie Catchfove, 13, and Gareth Morgan, 13, received all-round athletic awards for high performance in all track and field disciplines: sprints, distance, jumps, throws and hurdles. Sharma made B.C.’s all-time top 10 in the 80-metre hurdles, shot put and the pentathlon. NEW RECORD Julie Catchlove made the top 10 for B.C. in the 200-metre hurdles and established a new provincial Appointed head coach to the senior women’s open-age team is Metro Gerela. The North Vancouver coach took the 1986 under-18 girls’ team to victory in the Pacific Coast tournament held earlier in the year in Victoria. Gareth Morgan made the B.C. all-time top 10 list in the 200-metre hurdles. Luke Meyer, 15, was named for excellence in jumps, tying the B.C. Summer Games record in high jump at 1.88 metres and breaking the B.C. record in the iriple jump. He also received the multi-event award. Shannon Bard, 15, received a B.C. Athletics award for distance running and now holds the B.C. record for the 1,500 metres. She collected four gold medals at the summer games and reached the all-time top-10 in the 400, 800, 3,000 and 300-metre hurdles. OUTSTANDING Diana Osborne, 14, was selected as outstanding sprinter for her age group. She won gold medals in the A jonored high jump and the silver medal in the 80-metre hurdles at the B.C. Summer Games. Her name is now in the all-time top 10 for the 200-meire sprint and the 200-metre hurdles. - Steven Dong, 18, a long-stan- ding member of the Norwesters, is the undisputed 100 and 200-metre champion in the province. He tied the B.C. 100-metre re- cord with a time of 10.5 seconds. Dong won both the Nancy Greene and Harry Jerome scholar- ships for excellence in track and field. . He is presently enrolled in the Faculty of Commerce at UBC. Fifteen-year-old Sheku Bell was awarded the middle distance award and picked up a gold medal for his 800-metre run at the B.C.
