Residents fight for community character LYNN VALLEY residents are up in arms over a pro- posal they say will degrade the character of their neighborhood. By NEIL LUCE About 30 residents showed up in force at a North Vancouver District Council meeting Monday to oppose a rezoning proposal that would allow single family residen- tial lots in their neighborhood to be subdivided. If approved, the proposal would allow lots to be rezoned to 50 ft. by 120 ft. The lots are currently zoned 60 fr. by 120 tt. PRESERVE INTEGRITY “‘We want to preserve the integ- rity of where we live,’’ neighborhood representative Derek Andrews told district council at the public hearing. “People have moved here for the peace and quiet and for the beauty of the area. We object to what’s going on and we won't allow it to go through,”’ he said. Resident Bob Manchester said his ‘‘sense of space and community would be violated’ if rezoning were approved by council. / In total, more than 20 residents and homeowners stepped up dur- ing the hearing to voice opposition -to the rezoning proposal. PETITION OPPOSES Andrews, a resident of the area for more than nine years, said 24 households have signed a petition opposing the proposal submitted by Homeowner Gil Wardrop to rezone the neighborhood so he can split a property located at 1860 Burrill Street into two 50 ft. by 120 ft. lots. “The whole neighborhood has to be rezoned so that one lot can be split,’? Andrews said. ‘‘We’re talking about rezoning 31 to 32 parcels of property to satisfy one person’s interest. That's not fair.”’ Andrews’ said the proposal con- stitutes the fourth rezoning at- tempt in recent memory, adding that the residents are ‘‘sick and tired’’ of battling threats against the ‘‘character’’ of their neighborhood and want the issue laid to rest ‘‘once and for all.”’ ATTEMPTS DEFEATED Andrews said that all previous attempts to change the area’s zon- ing status have been defeated by district council. District council voted to refer the matter to its policy and plann- ing committee for review.
