Ao - Wednesday, November 14, 1984 - North Shore News Gs editorial ; News Viewpoi A happier scene orth Vancouver District’ voters can count themselves lucky this year. They are spared the mayhem that has developed in West Van---especially in the mayoralty contest---with reports of wholesale one-sided destruction of candidate signs, merchants intimidated into removing win- dow posters and other partisan tactics more appropriate to Nicaragua than the North Shore. By comparison, the District election scene is a model of decorum. For council, where at least one seat will be won by an outsider, the field consists of five reputable incumbents (Aldermen Clark, Dykeman, Gadsby, McMinn and Segal) and four challengers. Among the latter, socialist ex-alderman Ernie Crist is already well known to the elec- torate. Peter Faminow is another former alderman, though out of office since the 1960s. Newcomers Philip Marsh and Norm Vipond are unknown quantities, but show a reasonable grasp of aldermanic respon- sibilities. The basic choice is between experi- ence and the possible benefits of some new blood. For District’s four school board seats it’s a Straight fight on the restraint issue: the ‘‘hawks’’ (incumbents Regan and Goodman with newcomers Oliver Baker and Nancy Huot) vs. the ‘‘doves’’ (incumbents Lynas and Smelovsky with newcomers Maureen Buhler and Don Williams). The fifth challenger, somewhere in the middle, is Salim Kaderali. The calibre of all 18 candidates seems to ensure that, whoever loses, District voters will emerge the winners this Saturday. News and views est Van mayoralty candidate Tom Reid accuses The News of bias. Any reader who cares to check our elec- tion news pages knows, on the contrary, that both he and Mayor Humphreys have received objective, balanced coverage. On our editorial opinion pages we print ALL viewpoints, in- cluding our own. The fact that letters and other material sent us to date in support of Mr. Reid (and faithfully published) have been relatively few is hardly the fault of The News.
