C2 - Sunday, September 30, 1984 - North Shore News Competing forscholars ELEVEN Rhodes Scholar- ships will be awarded to Canadians this fall. They will entitle the winners to study at Oxford University in England for two and possibly three years commencing in September, 1985. The value of each Scholar- ship is approximately £10,000 per annum. Applications for the 1985 awards may be made until October 25, 1984. The Rhodes Scholarships, established in 1904 under the Will of Cecil Rhodes, are the best known of international Planning for the future [KYo? The turn out and audience response was very positive, Hicken says, and the women expressed an interest in hav- ing a local workshop in the future, which motivated the present seminar. Some of the problems associated with mid-life crisis include anxiety, boredom, depression, loss of identity and feelings of redundancy, Hicken says. Full-time mothers or full- time secretaries often find a vacuum left in their lives when they are no longer needed in the same capacity. So Hicken stresses that it is not just the traditional homemaker who experiences scholarships. Thev have veen the mode! fo: many similar awards in Canada, the United States and elsewhere. Rhodes ‘Scholars proceed to Oxford where unique op- portunities exist for general undergraduate studies and for advanced work in both the humanities and the sciences. The present stipend is suf- ficient to pay all expenses and to enable the Scholar to take advantage of excellent oppor- tunities for travel in Britain and on the continent of mid-life crisis, but it can be women who participate in a variety of roles and fields, but discover they are no longer needed. ‘‘Developing changes in their lives causes upheaval,’’ Hicken explains, but Second Spring is designed to- help women deal with changes in a positive manner, and to help them plan their life, rather than just let it hap- pen. The first session is an awareness workshop, finding out what lies between the women and the changes they wish to make. The second session features Consulting Psychologist Dolores Bate who will talk about self- imaging and _ confidence. Family nurse Renate Grif- fiths, who works with North Shore Family Services, will discuss loss in session three, and that will include loss of Europe during the three lengthy vacations of the Ox- ford academic year. Canadians, preferably in their third or fourth year of university work, who are un- married and between 18 and 24 years of age, are eligible for the scholarships. Application forms and particulars may be obtained from University Registrars or from the Secretary in each province. Applicants for the Rhodes Scholarshisp are not required to. write an examination. health, youth, children and husbands. Dr. Enid Pine will give her insights on relation- ships in session four, regar- ding feelings and _ better communication. And session six will cover life planning by social worker Lynn Brock, who has a Masters in counselling mid-life women. All of the speakers in the program are from the North Shore, and if anyone finds they would like to enter into a one-on-one program with any of most have a practise and are accessible. Rather than giving people the answers as to what to do with their lives, the group sessions are designed to help people look within themselves to find their own answers and come to terms with themselves.
