C2 - Sunday, April 24, 1983 - North Shore News FROM PAGE C1 Most cultures in North Amenica have a strong work ethic, Bagshaw says. People set their worth by what they do. “What's the first queston asked when meeting at a party?” he says. “What do you do for a living?” Many women are respoonding that they don't do anything: they stay at home. Bagshaw sees women who have rejected’ the stereotypical female roles, suffering a double identity loss. They are not satisfied with staying at home, yet find few careers open to them. Perhaps the saddest cases. says Bagshaw, are the older people he sees, who have returned to college after being laid off, or fired from employment they have had for ten or twenty years. “These are shattered people,” he says, “They're having to say ‘No one wants me.” Bagshaw in his) coun- selling, tmes to relate his years of work with the European educational systems, to the present situation. He = says. that Canada is just beginning to face what the Europeans have expenenced for years There, mass unem- ployment has meant limited post-secondary funding and NIGHT SCHOOL NOTES RY BN opportunities, so com- petition for entrance and within university programs 1s intense. Even then, Bagshaw, says, there aren't jobs for all the graduates. European students are looking to the Third World for employment. Bagshaw is advising Canadian students to do the same. Countries there are leaping from agranan life right into the technological age. There is a need for teachers, scientists, engineers, medical people and others. There, for at least the next ten or twenly years, there is a future But Bagshaw insists that finding other places to work isn't the final answer People Exercising ‘fiscal fitness’ | By LOUIS LIGH] | If you massed the biscal Fitness free lecture on April PK. you can stil catch at this ume at Carson Graham on Apnl 2S) Phe lecture is all about Utomiag up your financial awareness "and ‘getOnpg trim with your cash flow 9 A true fitness class fievesne tal Another free lecture Day Care Who Will lake Care of omy Child’ comeerns Oplons available for wotking parents ta be Car son Corafaam om Ageab to for thas ome, loro On May 3 youre offered Women and the Law at Boundary and ion May at Sutherland there s legal Pittalls oof Managing oa Pianning aod Starting ane Sinall Bustness The nent Mini Series beypins on May 2 and runs from Monday Ubotcveage hh Phursday at Carson Mita VW Painting and Decorating os Corban fro the pertect subyect for a con cutrated conmese amd your ll cat oo confidence that can Nave yor goburagge rate an eaebe nmxirve Spree tye uy prbeog ain foot Neour bierase Ye 0 perth MMetrnioty Pravtirseup takes place only on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday A good beginning for this one will be not to forget that there sno class on Phursday!
