Pioneer’s second and
possibly last 243-day orbit of
Venus next year will provide
data that will shed still
further light on the planct.
The spacecraft was launched
by the National
Acronautical and Space
Agency in August, 1978, and
beams profiles of the planet's
elevations

Its second orbit will
narrow the scanning down to
every 75 kilometers.

“Studying Earth alone is
like studying one patient to
develop psychoanalysis,”
Masursky said. “We know
that people are very dif-
ferent and we know that
planets are very different
from each other. But we
think both the similarities
and differences will be a
powerful tool to un-
derstanding Earth, how the
continents were formed and
how the ocean basins were
formed.”
