Lower Lonsdale’s first real Japa- nese food restaurant has, over the past year, watched a host of com- petitors open bright new Japanese restaurants to the north on Lons- dale, to the northwest in the Westview shopping centre and to .the west in West Vancouver. All have doubtless taken more than a nibble out of Manyo’s local trade. A less feisty operation might well have invested negative energy in “pining for the good oid days and grumbling about the fickle dining public. ‘Grumbfing, however, i is not Manyo's style; survival is. It has remained in business for the past 12 years, not because it is _one of the few Japanese restau- rants on the North Shore, but . because it is a good restaurant that gives the dining public good value for its dining dollar. Over the past decade, Manyo has also become an integra! part of the Lower Lonsdale neighbor- hood. ' But good neighbors sometimes get taken for granted in the fash- ionable stampede to the latest new restaurant of the year. And, conversely, good neighbors sometimes start to take their clientele for granted. Enter the cold shower of com- petition, an invigorating wakeup call that has a way of making par- ties on both sides of the neighbor- hood shower curtain regard each other with fresh eyes. It put the Many braintrust back special sushi plates. into fighting trim. They donned red trunks and came out swinging. In the first round they took stock of their opponents and saw the Manyo experience being duplicated and improved upon in newer venues. They took a few body blows and a sharp jab or two to the culinary chin. But they have since come back with some telling counter-punches of their own. For instance, Manyo’s happy hour offers 50% off the price cf all the restaurant’s sushi from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Monday and Tuesday. And a revitalized kitchen has focused attention on improving the quality, variety and presenta- tion of the ;estaurant’s Japanese cuisine. fhe combination of better value _and better product adds up to a Mo Betta’ Manyo, which now ap- pears to be holding its own against the new generation of North Shore Japanese restaurants. Yuki Kasukawa, co-owner and head sushi chef at Lower Lonsdale’s Manyo-Sushi, presents one of the restaurant's night were two of the best the Table Hopping team has sampled at Manyo over the past decade. The restaurant's Dinner Specials (a half dozen, ranging from Sushi to Teriyaki and Tempura) are all five-course Japanese feasts. Ours started with Prawn Sunomono Salad and a small but interesting appetizer plate that in- cluded grilled tuna marinated in ginger and soya sauce, stir-fried geoduck and salmon tempura; it continued through plates of prawn and vegetable tempura, in- vigorating miso soup and the gen- erous main entree; it ended with a small plate of fresh fruit and a piping hot mug of Japanese tea. A full meal deal Japanese style and a match for appetites of any nationality. The presentation of each of the five courses was uniformly stylish and colorful.
