O’ROURKE'S powerful story about the coming of age, birth, death and growth, Rites of Spring, continues this week at Ann MacDonald Theatre until June 2, By EVELYN JACOB News Reporter First Impression Theatre’s pro- duction of O’Rourke’s play con- cerns the character Michael, a teenage boy in search of himself. The play parallels the Passion of Christ, and the teenagers sym- bolize the familiar biblical char- acters; however, the story takes place in the modern world. While Rites of Spring is classical in style (hence the Greek chorus) it tackles contem- porary themes and issues: the characters question the Roman Catholic church's stance on Li GARDERS RESTAURANT homosexuality, abortion and suicide. O'Rourke wrote Rites of Spring in 1987 but it didn’t reach the stage until now. “‘It just sat on the shelf. | kept looking at it and saying to myself, ‘t feel good about this one,’’’ explained O'Rourke. ‘Then | said to myseli, ‘I've got to stop saying this and just do it.’ O'Rourke is the author of the hit musical Skool and Childbomb: Thoughts and Ideas on the Subject of War. Rites of Spring was awarded best director (Sarah Dafoe), best supporting male and female ac- tor (Ress Haynes and Carole Higgins), and best sound and lighting at the North Shore Festi- val of Plays last month.
