NORTH SHORE NEWS COMMUNITY LIFE Practising what she Deana Lancaster a News Reporter dlancaster@nsnews.com CATHARINE Warning was work- ing on the business plan for her vitamin and sports nutrition store when a friend asked her to join his seaZsummit team. “Ut had no idea what I -was agreeing to,” said Warning with a laugh, as she sat on the couch in her Lonsdale store fast week. “Once Thad a chance 1 Jooked it up on the Net, and | couldn’ believe it.” The sea2summit adventure race, which takes place Sept. 9 and 10, begins in Decp Cove and finishes in Whistler. It covers 160 km through six stages which include . ocean kayaking, mountain biking, navigating on foot over trails and boulders, through bushes = and more. And that’s just day one. ; Day rwo begins with a bike ride through the Cheakamus Canyon, a trek. through a technical orienteering course, and then the final stage — according to the race Web site: a “hike/run/crawl” up one side of Whistler Mountain and down the other. The race also includes an “unknown challenge” in the form of a Tyrolean Traverse — a suspended rope over a river or gorge with a pulley system. Racers don’t know the iocation of the traverse until they reach the checkpoint closest to it. “I called my friend after I read about it and said ‘What have you gotten me into?’ and he said ‘I guess Pll wait to tell you about the 10-day race I want to go in next year.’ ” Despite feeling overwhelmed by . the length and demands of the race, Warning began training. And her store, Peak Nutrition of the North Shore, is sponsoring the four-person team with nutrition and training supplements, as well as logo wear. “We're doing it because we want- ed to challenge ourselves. And because if I’m in here telling people to get out there, then I have to do it too.” Practising what she preaches is a code Warning has followed for years. She began to take an interest in nutrition and the importance of health about eight years ago. Not long after, she discovered the out- doors, and took up hiking, kayaking, biking, skiing, rock climbing and more. “I thought ‘Wow — what have | been doing with my time?’ ” In February she turned her pas- sion for health and being active in the outdoors into her business and opened the store. She works as a nutritional consultant for her cus- tomers: helping them choose vita- mins and supplements; keeping a selection of reference books on hand; and applauding their active lifestyles with her “Wall of Fame” where she’s hung photos of her cus- “I called my friend after Iread about it and said ‘What have you gotten me into?’” tomers getting out there. “I really want to make a differ- ence, and inspire people — whether it’s a walk on the seawall or doing the seaZsummit.” ‘ Now, as well as running her store, she has the race to train for. She's stepped up her fitness schedule and hits the gym for weight training three days per week, and does Tae , NEWS photo Terry Paters CATHARINE Warning, owner of Peak Nutrition of the North Shore, is busy these days as she trains for September's sea2summit adventure race. Bo and spinning to improve her car- dio. She also spends a few evenings a week mountain biking or paddling. And she’s taking extra care with what she eats. “Training demands so much more of your body ... it’s easy to overtrain.” As well as eating good carbs, lots of veggies and drinking litres of water, she’s taking a multi- vitamin, extra vitamin C, protein supplements — because she’s a veg- etarian — and sport supplements for muscle support, recovery and to help keep her immune system in top shape. Selection: 15,000 square fcot showroom with furniture canine connection alking with the butterflies and dogs I love going for walks with my two dogs in the early mornings of spring. The warm sunshine and wonderful scents of blossoms in the air are invigorating {unless you have hayfever). Everyone and their dog is in a good mood. Dog owners seem to bend over with enthusiasm to pick up after their pooch. With imaginary butterflies swirling around my head I feel a bit like Snow White and I think to myself that nothing could be more prefect. Then some yahoo drives by in a pickup, jacked up to high heaven advertising his lack of sexual prowess, sith two dogs in the back, unre- strained, barking like freaks to the song “Highway to Hell” which is blaring out the truck’s windows. My fantasy is shattered and I am thrown back to real- ity like a pitcher’s fast ball. Spring fever is renowned as a “better judgement inhibitor” for both human and dog. In the case of the pickup with unrestrained dogs in the back, one would have to be really daft — and living in a hole in the ground with the only form of mental stim- ulation being the WWF on TV — to not realize or care that this act is terribly unsafe for the dogs. As well, the dri- ver can get a pretty hefty fine. Goofs!
