20 - Sunday, May 27, 1990 - North Shore News SPORTS Sentinel track team makes local history SENTINEL BECAME the first school in the 30-year history of the North Shore high school track and field meet to win the grand ag- gregate team championship for five consecutive years when the Spartans edged Handsworth Royals 861% to 833% at Swangard May 17. Sentinel’s reign breaks the re- cord of four straight champion- ships won by Hillside in the late 1970s. However, it is the lowest total for a winning school since 1974 and the narrowest margin of vic- tory since 1982 when Handsworth edged Hillside by 1/2 points. Handswerth has had a remark- able rebuilding program since finishing sixth two years ago. No less than nine meet records were broken out of 127 events, an astounding feat considering the great athletes that set seemingly unsurpassable marks during the meet’s heyday in the 1970s. Handsworth’s Lori Durward broke two of them — in the senior 800-metre in 2:11.69 to eliminate the one she set last year, and the 1,500-metre in 4:31.68 where she clipped more than eight seconds off Birgit Otto’s 1979 mark. Dur- ward was less than .9 of a second from breaking Otto's 3,000-metre mark as well. Diane Osborne of Windsor, who also won three events to share the senior girls’ aggregate with Dur- ward, broke Scarlet Vanden Bos’ 1978 100-metre hurdles standard of 15.20 with a 15.09 clocking. Julie Catchgtove of Sentinel won the open 400-metre hurdles in 1:06.16, edging Lestie Beckerman’s 1:06.30 in 1984 off the record list. Beckerman is now a coach at Sen- tinel. West Vancouver's senior boys’ 4x100-metre relay toppled Carson Graham’s 1975 record of 44.1 with a run of 43.51 and Handsworth’s senior girls’ medley relay cut more than eight seconds off the 1986 re- cord with a time of 2:54.25. Josh Danielson of Brackendale won three bantam boys’ events in- cluding the 400-metre where he beat Sheku Bell’s 1985 record with atime of 55.21. Two athletes broke bantam shot put records that were set before they were born. Sutherland’s Ryan Jones heaved the boys’ shot 12.21 metres to erase Ryan McAdam’s 1975 distance of 11.99. Marian Anderson of St. Thomas Aquinas put the girls’ shot 9.02 metres, bet- ter than Becky Connell’s 8.86 metres in 1976. NV motorcyclist places MOTORCYCLE RACER Dave Sjoblom produced some top results in Round One of the Western Regional Championship series in Calgary recently. In the 600 production class, Sjoblom finished third on his Yamaha FZR 600 Sjoblom, sponsored in part by the North Shore News, said last year’s racing experience on a six- stroke bike helped him keep at the front of the pack in the 600 pro- duction race at Calgary. Sjoblom will next be racing on June 3 in Round Three at Westwood and hopes to complete the Alberta series as well.
