Marathon man receives award

WEST VANCOUVER'S miracle
marathon man Hugh Clifford was
presented with a plaque of ap-
preciation from West Vancouver
District Council Monday night.

Clifford, who celebrated his
80th birthday earlier this year,
broke the warld record for mara-
thoners $0 and older on Oct. 5
when he ran the 26.2 mile mara-
thon distance in 4:19:00 at the 19th
World Veterans Marathon Cham-
pionships hosted by Richmond.

The marathon was the 14th Clif-
ford has competed in since he got
involved in the sport soon after he
retired from his picture framing
business.

His best time in the standard
marathon distance is 4:01:21.

Clifford shook hands with all
council members and proudly held
the plaque aloft after the pres-
entation.

“Mr. Clifford, your community
is very proud of you,"’ said outgo-
ing West Vancouver Mayor Der-

rick Humphreys. ‘‘You have
brought fame to West Vancouver.
We think you are amazing."
