north shore news __ MAIL Box Acupuncture p ints called misleading Dear Editor: Re: Needled by BiC.'s physiotherapists, July 4. We are both health profes- sionals, a physiotherapist and a family physician, working on the North Shore, and we find Mr. Grant Sinith’s comments to be misleading. As members of the Acupuncture Foundation af Canada institute (AFC) and as men bers in good standing in both of our respective professions, we would like to clear up the confusion which has been cre- ated by Mr. Smith’s lack of awareness of certain facets about our organization. #2 It was stated that Mr. Smith believes that these medical pro- fessionals have only received crash course training in the field and are not fully qualified to offer acupuncture services. The AFC] teaches acupune- ture only to qualified profes- sionals who already have the university-level training — in anatomy, physiology, and relat- ed medical subjects allowing these professionals {ph $5 physiotherapists, dentists, chi- ropractors, naturopaths, regis- tered nurses and licensed acupuncturists) to enter an acupuncture program with a considerable foundation of knowledge and experience. It is, therefore, not neces- sary, for example, to review the cause and symptoms of asthma or ankle sprain and this helps to protect the public from incor- rect diagnosis. AFCI courses are offered to these profession- als because they are self-gov- erning and cach includes acupuncture within its scope of practice. @ Mr. Smith says that a proper- ly qualified = acupuncturist should have three years train- ing, including clinical work — bat that. a number of local col- lege: offer abbreviated, nine day editions of the taining program, which he teels docs- nt onearly cover enough ground fo attain licensing. There is not a training pro- gram in Canada or the United States that teaches solely acupuncture for a three-year period. It would be included as a part of the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine. VYhe AFCI core curriculum (first three courses) has as its foundation a unique form of “anatomical” — acupuncture, which requires the above back- ground to learn and appreciate. This approach — allows acupuncture to be casily inte- grated into Western practices (there are 9O hours of entry- level instruction prior tothe Level ] exam). Level 11 of our program begins che integration of classical acupuncture as well as advanced = aanaromical acupuncture — a total of 220 hours when all of the AFC courses are completed. This is in keeping with the number of training hours recommended by othe World — Health Organization for medical pro- fessionals who wish to practise acupuncture. The AFCT reminds its members to practise within their scope of practice and within their level of training. Comments such as Mr. Smith’s do not serve the public well and do nothing to oro- mote the integration of acupuneturs inte the health- care system.
