Morfitt replaces Erma Morrison, who retired from the position Decembez..i 986. Morfitt will serve a six-year renewable term as the non-partisan auditor of the government’s finan- cial and accounting practices. An annual report compiled by the auditor general seeks out gov- ernment spending waste and often makes suggestions for improve- ment. ‘““My particular pleasure with it is that I feel this is the senior pro- fessional position in the province and also a chance to serve the public sector at large,’’ said Mor- fitt. ise orge Morfitt... named B.C.'s second auditor general. District Council to help her cross the street at Kings Avenue and 15th Street. Marcia George wrote to council that on her way Johnson Elementary School, she, and ‘‘many other kids’’, must wait for about 15 cars to proceed through the intersection before one stops to let them cross. There is no stop sign at Kings, but a crosswalk is clearly painted on the road. “My mother has phoned the police a couple of times, but they haven’t done anything,” wrote George. ‘‘Is there anything you could do about it?”’ West Vancouver deputy municipal manager Doug Allan said municipal staff is checking traffic patterns at the intersection and has asked the West Vancouver School Board for suggestions. He said council has not received any other complaints about the corner in the last year and a half. Allan said the situation does not warrant installing a traffic light which he said has the undesirable side effect of making children complacent about safety. “We don’t want people, especially young people, to make the assumption that it is safe to cross just because the light turns green,” Allan said. The easiest solution, he said, would be for the kids to cross at Mathers or Fulton: avenues where four-way stops slow the traffic. But George’s mother, Anne, says both four-way stop intersec- tions are ‘“‘quite out of her way.’” The Fulton crossing, she said, would add about a helf mile to her daughter’s route.
