Christmas buoys North

Local retailers
enjoy brisk sales
in festive season

RETAILERS reveled in this
year’s last-minute
Christmas rush.

A random telephone trip
through North Shore malls
showed retailers generally happy
with the way things have gone this
year, especially in the last week

before Christmas.

The heavy snowfall on Dee. 23
and 24 alse didn’t pose much of an
obstacle to last-minute shoppers,
said retailers.

Tu fact, said Gord Everingham,
the owner of Silver Dise CD store,
it’s probably been good for busi-
ness because it may have discour-
aged window shoppers.

“The weather has helped us
because people are buying, not
looking,” said Everingham, whose
store is in the Capilano Mall.

Kob Cybak, the manager of
John Henry the Bicvele Man across
from the Park and Tilford Mall,
said the snow slowed business on
Dec, 23, but Christmas Eve was

pretty busy.

Overall for the Christmas sea-
son, sales are up at the store 65%
over last year, but that impressive
number may have been bolstered
by the fact the store has more floor
space at its new location, Cybak
said.

However, he’s encouraged
because he sees people spending
more this year and not haggling
over prices, as often happens at bike
shops.

“People are not as concerned
about spending, money,” he said.
“The wallets are loosening a bit.”

Also in a new location and happy
with the results is Tom Young, the
owner of Hangers at Park Royal.

The snow made no difference to
sales, which have been brisk.

“We're extremely happy about
our sales this year,” he said:

Last vear, the business was at the
corner of Esplanade and Lonsdale
in a North Vancouver heritage
building that will be retained as
part of a new development.

Young said the new location is
busier and that makes up for the
increased rent. But he misses the
community feeling in Lonsdale.

Young said the importance of
sales during the Christmas season
varies for different businesses.
Although it’s an important month,
“it’s not the big cash cow a fot of
people imagine it is,” he said.

December, but business has really
picked up in the fast week, said
assistant manager Sharon Falck.

said.

November was also a great
month, she added.

Silver Disc’s Everingham also
said the beginning of December
was slow, but business was great in
the fast couple of days before
Christmas.

He said a news media preaching
doom and gloom at the beginning
of the month restrained consumers.

Overall, he said the Christmas
season's sales have been good.
