Nahanee of the Squamish Nation and Alfreda (née Thorne) Nahanee were married on Sept. 24, 1946, in St. Paul's Catholic Church on Mission Indian Reserve No. 1 in North Vancouver. Jim and Freda had 15 children, with 14 still surviving: Jamie, Jerry, Keith, Sheila, Ruth, Scott, Jan, Eileen, Fran, Grace, Joyce, Tony, Sue and Faye. They have 28 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Jim was the Squamish Nations’ first business manager and the first native business manager in Canada who established a self-administration of Indian Affairs for indian reserves. He was also an elected Squamish Nation Councillor for four years. Jim served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War from November 1943 to March 1946, and received the 1939- 4945 Canadian Voluntary Service Metal with clasp. He also worked as a Linerman fitter in the '40s for the Burrard Shipyard in North Vancouver. Freda worked as a welder, at the Windslow Shipyard on Bainbridge Island, Washington, from April 22, 1944, to August 1945, when the war ended. Since 1970 Freda has owned and operated her business, Authentic Cowichan indian Knits Arts and Crafts shop, located at their home on Third Street. Happy golden wed- ding anniversary to you both!
