There followed a tour of

European capitals and other

cities, mainly by train:
Warsaw and Prague, ete., en
route to Switzerland. About
1,000 miles in all. An
unusual route. But every-
thing about his story is
unusual.

Having had some experi-
ence in these things, | think
Tam qualified to judge.

He spoke no German but
marched into raiiway sta-
tions (always heavily policed
in war-time), peering at
time-tables etc. And was
then caught trying to cross
the Swiss border on foot.

He claims an Englishman
provided him with false
papers in the name of Karl
Fricdrich.

But why would someone
who spoke no German take
a German identity?
Whatever, Rambo ended up
in the hands of the Gestapo
who, he says, tortured him,
believing he was a German
traitor.

After beating this nobody
up for two days they discov-
ered he was not a German.
Well, the Gestapo may have
been many things but they
were not stupid. It would
have. taken them about five
minutes to find out he was
not one of them.

His punishment, he says,
was to be sent to Auschwitz.
But on the way they put
him up for a while at
Bergen-Belsen. No doubt
they were anxious to show
him everything. For posteri-

ty’s sake.

things at Belsen. If there

the camp having been cap-
tured intact.

Asa stoker, he claims he
fed logs into the fires,
although other sources say
the crematoria fucl was
coke. He also had to start
the fires up every morning,
although round-the-clock
burning of bodies would, |
think, demand round-the-
clock stoking.

According to him, men
in Auschwitz were having
their penises cut off, people
were being disemboweled,
and live babies and even live
adults were being thrown
into the flames.

Our man was finally sent
back to a POW camp. We
are asked to believe, though,
that he said nothing to his
fellow prisoners about his
experiences.

He kept the whole thing
a secret for 44 years, not
even telling his family.
VERY strange.

In 1990 the Australian
government gave him
$10,000 compensation for
having been in Auschwitz. It
is true, too, that a handful
of Western prisoners were
there. It had working
camps.

Bur the book is deficient
in details. Names are in
short supply. Not a single
camp official. or other pris-
oner in Auschwitz is named

and we are not even told the .

name of the man who
allegedly gave him his false
papers.

Rambo's exciting life did
not end when Germany col-
lapsed. He claims he teamed
up with a British tank crew,
met the Russians (where?)
and saw one of them raping
an old woman. Rambo shot
the man. Other Russians
