Cycle club adopts trail standards From page 1 properly =o maintained | and authorized trails, rather than on the current ad-hoc basis. Liz Earle, the executive director of the 1100-member EMP Society (formerly Extreme Mountainbike People Society), agreed that people who aren‘t familiar with trail building and drainage can build trails that erode quickly with riders and rain. But she added that a trail- building standards manual was recently completed which the EMP Society hopes to pro- vide to as many (rail-builders as possible “so people start .0 think of the environment when putting trails in.” Volunteers have been restoring trails since March, she said. She points out there's a big whack of habitat out there and = she doesn’t sce anything in danger at the moment. She says that far from dam- aging the envirunment, the experiment is attempting to alleviate problems. Earle said bikers have been building trails all over the North Shore mountains, “It's a litle bit out of control.” she said. Earle’s hopeful that by giving bikers the ability to use and maintain the trails, less pressure will be put on the forest by those building secret trails. On a recent Wednesday, she counted 55 cars with mountain bikes, for a total of at least 100 bikers in the woods. “It's a pretty popular area,” she said. The North Shore, she added, is recognized world- wide for its mountain bike trails, “which is ironi¢ consid- ering there are no legal trails to ride.” When a new trail guide book comes out soon, Earle expects the number of riders ~ onthe North Shore to triple. However, one person who wants the experiment to work is Kevin Beil. chief naturalist who may soon be monitoring the bike trial for the district. He said trails for biking and hiking can cause less impact if designed correctly, but added mountain bikers like challenging trails with jumps “so fT have a feeling it may be quite hard to build an environmentally friendly one.” Bell added he’s willing to work with bikers: “If we don't work with them we'll get ille- zal trails.” Earle said she’s proud that the Griffen will be the first official mountain bike trail on the North Shore. “It still needs to go through a public approval process so we're not quite there,” she said, Earle said the trails are mainly used by mountain bik- ers becwuse they are twisty and don’t present viewpoints, which keeps hikers — off. “There's a very low percent- age of hiker — mountain biker conflict potential.” Parks planner Susan Rogers said there haven't been any complaints received by the district regarding envi- ronmental damage. om 2 g 7 COHFARE sti0 eva Said pine Sofa ped frame, triple foam cose futon, scotch-qardes futon cover, Gitiouys and pilew covers Wbsle quaahties fast 267 €.
