Menu for tonight: * Glass of House Red ($4.75) * Minestrene Soup ($3.50) * Cannelloni Ala Spinaci ($10.95) « Lasagna ($10.95) HOT POLICE dining tip gleaned from recent Table Hepping interrogation: try Tasi’s. Yes, officer, a sterling idea. No, officer, 1 was not thinking of a doughnut joke. I was thinking instead of the virtues of honesty and diligence. And that had gotten me thinking of Tasi’s, which has tong been on the Table Hopping list to revisit. The last time the Table Hopping department par- amit tecomes Timothy Renshaw took of Tasi's it was Taso’'s, prior to that it was Taso's Steak, Pizza and Spaghetti House, and, for an everso brief interlude it, was Baci’s. The name changes revolve around complicated restaurant industry issues that have little bearing on today’s tale. Suffice it to say that the personality behind all three restaurant incarnations at No. 3 Lonsdale is Tasos Collias. A veteran of the Hy’s restaurant chain, Collias embarked on his own restaurant adventure two decades ago in West Vancouver. He moved to his current Lower Lonsdale location in ) Beef Cabbage Saete, Potato nt Hovisadio couse Broiled Sea Bans, Ls Quinte Spa Style Lower Calorites - Richer Flavor Grilled Young Beef liver, Glazed Orion Baliimore Crab Coles . Tasos now approaches his 10th anniversary at No. 3 Lonsdale. And his 23rd anniversary of delivering his brand of cuisine to North Shore diners. It’s a feat few other restaurateurs have been able to duplicate. It is also testimony to the enduring popularity of Tasos Collias and his approach to the restaurant trade, There is nothing very complicated about either. _ There is instead a robust streak of hard work and consistency ihot runs through the two. When you take a table at a Tasos restaurant you. know you are going to get your money’s worth. And that counts for a !ot in these days of pretty plates and nouveau cuisines, The Tasi's menu departs somewhat from its Taso’s predecessor. Both are anchored in southern Mediterranean fast-food cookery. But Tasi's has dropped Taso's pizza section and has drifted closer to Italy and further away from Greece ~ than Taso’s. Pastas predominate. All are available in regular (250 grams of pasta — $8.75) the Jenacious and large (500 grams of pasta — $10.95) portions. Linguine, Rigatoni, Fettuccine, Ravioli and Spaghetti are ali well repre~ sented in varieties ranging from pescatore to gorgonzo- la and vongole. A pasta for every mem- ber of the family. Tasi's also offers a good selection of veal, chicken, seafood and beef entrees ($13 to $15 will get you anything from Pollo Parmigiana to Broiled Filet of Salmon and Steak and Lasagna.) Tasi's wine list is a sim- ple affair ($15 to $35), Italian selections predomi- nate. Unfortunately, there are only two uninteresting house wines available by the glass. But what is delivered on the plate will fill the bill for” most Italian food fans. The sampled Minestrone - was a substantial and full- flavored rendition ‘of the classic Italian vegetable soup: lets of vegetables; . some kidney and navy beans; pasta; and a sturdy - soup stock designed to fend. off the chill grey of winter. ' The cannelloni, mean- |... while — highly recom. : mended by the local con- stabulary — was more than a match for Table’ ~ ° “ Hopping’s appetites. -- : Served by. our cheery . and attentive waitress, the deep-dish baked pasta was: stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach and topped.” with lashings of mozzarella.
