Dear Editor: Is it any Wonder that governments don't listen to as: we, the public are giving them mixed messages. Weask -—- no, we demand — that they culexpenses. But on the other hand when the cutback hits us person- ally we say, “Oh, no, you can’t cul that.” Ms. Deborah Lutz. who didn't want to lose her job as a school crossing guard, is concermed that she will lose her benefits such as dental, extended health and group life insurance. She also states that she has five kids in school a mortgage to puy and her husband works for B.C. Tel. Well, | believe B.C, Tel has a good benefits program which her husband would qualify for so that: she woulda’t lose the benefit package. it would simply change over to her husband's responsibility. shouldn't parents who have children af school age ar youttger geandparents who have school-ave srandehil- dren volunteer their services as crosswalk guards? If a school has 200 to 400 students and they are in school for 35 to 38 weeks a year it would take only 75 to 80 parents volunteering two days (three to four hours a day) each year to Oli this void. I don’t think that’s too much to ask of parents who are continually asking governments to cul spending. Come.on people, let's get off our ‘duffs” and get out and do something for our community instead of always expecting to hive someone paid to do the jab. We can save a quarter of a million dollars of our money on the school guard crossing issue alone —-- and there is no need to sacrifice the safety of our children, Don D. McDermid Also, what ever happened to volunteers? Why North Vancouver Photos | Leave act's leave offend | provisions alone Dear Editor: Over the years North Shore News has received several jour- nalistic awards for its reporting and photography. Regrettably the quest for awards seems to be more important than disturbing young children and some adults. Your front page photograph in this Friday’s lune 9) paper of the motorcycle ‘accident victim, not to mention last week's bus acci- dent, is insensitive. I's ‘insensitive to the victims and their families who have had enough trauma for one weck thank you. It's insensitive to my children when they walk up to the door and find this unsolicited blood and guts journalism staring at them from the door mat. I understand your desire for . getting that award winning photo, but at what cost? Perhaps a trip to Bosnia would satiate your desire. Bill Erlenbach berlenba@direct.ca tp Dear Editor: Employers: have been making misleading suggestions that. the new Employment Standards Act will give workers a chance to slack off. For example..in your May 28 article, Grouse Mountain general manager and president Stuart McLaughlin calls the act's provi- sion for five days leave to care for sick family members “an entitle- ment that employees will take given human nature’ and further complains that “it will lead to inefficiencies.” What McLaughlin and his col- Jeagues don’t mention is that this leave is unpaid. In other words, this leave is not ‘another holiday and simply means that a parent can leave work to care for a sick child or other fami- ly member without being fired. _ As North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA David Schreck stated in GE 18 DELUXE REFRIGERATOR ® glass shelves: © deluxe interior e white on white or black handles 899 7350 kenari your article “most reasonable employers would take that paosi- tion anyway.” Surely, if a child is so if that a parent must take unpaid time off a nuiximum of five days a year, that should not be reason for firing that employee. However, given “the human nature” of those emplayers who are not reasonable and Jack basic compassion, this new Employment Standards bill is much needed protection for work- ers with families. This provision is good for employers, because many employers know that workers who are concerned about a sick family member at home are less productive than they would other- wise be.
