In 1971, he opened the first
Polo store and introduced a col-
lection of ladies’ tailored shirts.
He followed up the next year with

he shows each season may not
send shock waves rippling through
his audience, he has been at the
forefront of many trends in the
business. .

His concepts have given obvious
inspiration to other stores such as
The Gap, Banana Republic and
J.Crew, which are recycling his
designs at lower prices.

He also introduced the idea of
in-store shops in a department
store, multi-page advertising in
magazines, and housing a store in
a freestanding building.

Like his rofe in business, he
takes the lead in fundraising activ-
ities. He launched the Nina Hyde
Centre for Breast Cancer Research
in Washington, D.C. through per-
sonal contributions and fundrais-

ing.

He launched Madison Avenue
Christmas for Children Day in
which Madison Avenue stores do-

was also co-chairman of the Sev-
enth on Sale benefit which raised

York City AIDS Fund.
