Tim Bell FILM REVIEW It's been a while, but the twit- ching neurotic of Love and Death and Sleeper is fumbling his way through a bizarre night in pursuit of a homicidal maniac. Weaving in and out of the thick fog, the cowardly vigilante loses his job and his fiancee, gets chased inte a brothel, encounters several hostile citizens — including the women he jilted at the altar (Julie Kavner in the film’s funniest per- formance) — and, of course, bumps into Mia Farrow, a circus sword-swallower playing hookey by turning hooker. There is a daring set design with wonderful black and white photography and, as usual, an ex- ceptiona! cast. John Malkovich and John Cusack have the larger toles, but it’s a real treat seeing Kathy Bates, Jodie Foster, Lily Tomlin, Madonna, and Kate Nelligan in minuscule, but memo- rable, parts. Basic Instinct * % (Tristar) Rated R (at the Park & Tilford, Granville, Oakridge, Richport, Station Square, Coquitlam and Scott cinemas) IS THERE a clause in Michael Douglas’ film contract stipulating that he gets to romp around buck-naked with young women, preferably blond? First Fatal At- traction, then Shining Through and now Basic Instinct (seems that the female leads must get pro- gressively younger, too). Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) has a resume that rivals the criminals he arrests. She lies to protect Nick’s career, and she knew Catherine (in the biblical sense) years ago. Passable acting and Jerry Goldsmith's exceptional score can’t hide the film’s emptiness. This is a character-driven mystery, with unlikable, one-dimensional characters and a mechanical mystery — almost as mechanical as the much-ballyhooed sex scenes. shoots tourists make for very in- teresting reading. Too bad this isn’t that story. Since the bad-boy cop is going cold turkey on ail his favorite vices, his superiors give him a case that'll tantalize his tastebuds — sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. San Francisco's latest murder case brings Nick in contact with Catherine Tremell (Sharon Stone), a rich novelist who exudes chilliness (perhaps because she wears such short skirts and no underwear). Why does Nick suspect the bisexual slaughtered her rock star lover with an icepick? Could be that her latest bestseller describes an identical ritual killing. But Nick has plenty of other suspects. Catherine’s jealous les- So, methinks you doth protest too much — the only thing hot about this film is the controversy.
