Z2 - Wednesday, November 7, 1990 - North Shcre News sears ANTIFREEZE FALL IS here. With it. the change of weather brings seasonat duties. One such duty that can kill inno- cent animals, pets and wildlife. is the use of antifreeze in your vehi- cles cooling system. To illustrate the potential tragic consequence, | § tell the story of an employee's two B cats. The first sign, retrospectively, that something was wrong was a cat vomiting her meal. Later that evening it appeared that one of the cats was sleeping more. The next Be day, this same cat was seen to vomit and was obviously resting more. The following day the cat again vomited its meal and started to show signs of weakness and in- # coordination. At this time the cat was brought into the hospital and intravenous fluids were started. Because of the non-specific signs, blood tests and X-rays were done. EE The blood tests retumed the following day to show that this cat , had metabolic problems anu that specifically the kidneys were doing poorly. A subsequent urinalysis confirmed the cause of the kidney failure — amtifreeze poisoning. Despite intensive care, the kidneys did not respond and the cat had to be euthanised. Meanwhiie during the hospitalization of this cat, the se- cond cat started to show some sians of vomiting and lethargy. This cat was rushed to the hospital but to no avail. This second cat subsequently suffered kidney failure and could not be saved. This cat was also euthanised. Our employees third cat fortunately cid not exhibit any signs. How did this happen? Because of a spill onto the road of cooling fluid. The cats subsequently walk- ed through the fluid and groomed the antifreeze off their fur or drank the fluid overtly. Animals are at- tracted to antifreeze because of the sweet taste, Very little has to be in- gested. Once ingested, animals 1iagy Vomit because of an upset stomach or may exhibit signs of in- toxication. The latter occurs because the active ingredient. Unlike alcohol though, ethylene glycol becomes metabolized within the body to preduce oxalate crystals. These crystals accumulate within the kidneys and destroy the kidney structure with resultant complete shutdown of kidney function. This leads to an extremely ill animal and eventually death. The toxicity of antifreeze is dose dependent. An animal can get just a touch and with early treatment survive It can take as little as a teaspoonful to kill a cat while about a teaspoon per kilogram is necessary for death in a dog. Avoiding exposure to this ‘sweet’ killer is a must. Therefore please clean up any spillage that oceurs with any cooling fluid leak and keep any containers safely out of reach of animals (and small children). Preferably, clean spills up with a dry absorbant so as not to flush the toxin into our creeks. One bit of good news is that an alternative to this deadly product now exists — Kooltone Readers. Is there anything we should do to care for their teeth? Answer: Dry dog or cat food will not clean the teeth. It does appear that dry food will not promote pla- que build up as much as softer food, expecially the semi-moist brands. In my practice we see all types of cats and dogs on all types of food and there is very little con- sistency between the type of the food and the condition of the teeth.
