GVRD sponsors essay contest THE THREE topics for the annual Secondary Schools Essay Contest sponsored by the Greater Van- couver Regional District were recently announced. One asks students what their priorities are for the use of local government tax dollars; another deals with the subject of disposable products and overpackaging; the third deals with emergency preparedness in Greater Van- couver, The contest, in its eleventh year, is open to students in Grades 9 to 12 in all schools in the Lower Mainland, from West Vancouver and Vancouver to Maple Ridge and Matsqui. Secondary school students from North and West Vancouver, Bowen Isiand and Lions Bay are eligible. First prize is $500, second $400 and third $300. In addition, there are 10 Merit Awards of a hard- cover book or a family member- ship to Science World or the Van- couver Public Aquarium. Entries can be made throughout the school year, but not later than April 6, 1990. : Entries should not be more than 2,000 words, typewritten (doubie- spaced) and include the student's mame, age, address, phone number, school, class and a bibli- ography. Entries are judged on content, research, general appearance and use of language. Graphics may be used. Handbills and posters giving detailed information on the topics are available in public libraries throughout the Lower Mainland. These are the topics for the 1990 contest: * What are YOUR priorities for local tax dollars? What are your priorities for the allocation of local government tax dollars in the metropolitan region?
