na teacher training TEACHER TRAINING today is different from what it once was, says the director of Simon Fraser's professional development pro- gram. “Cutbacks in the public school system in recent years decreased the demand for new teachers,”’ said Dr. Sandy Dawson. ‘‘Today that trend is being reversed as schools seek new teachers to replace those who have retired, or to fill new teaching positions created by increases in school population. “But the changing classroom situation has affected the way in which teachers are trained."” Dawson said teachers today are expected to teach a variety of grades in elementary school and a variety of subjects at secondary school level. “The need today is not for generalists, but for teachers who are broadly trained with multiple specialities,’ Dawson said. For several years, the enrolment of would-be teachers in Simon Fraser’s professional development program was reduced because of the unexpected surplus of B.C. teachers. Now, says Dawson, students once again consider teaching an at- tractive career option, anc are will- ing to improve their qualifications to meet current needs. “Almost two hundred teachers completed their programs and were recommended for teaching certifi-- cates this semester,’’ he said. “These graduates are extremély well qualified to meet the variety of needs experienced by school . districts around the province.’’ North and West Vancouver res- idents include Michelle Louise Smith (BRE UBC); Peter Nicholas Smyth (BFA Regina); Caroline Frances Wilson (BA UBC); Kevin Pau!
