ecision threatens nest

Dear Editor:

Mary Huntington and the Se-
cond Seymour Girl Guides Com-
pany are trying to save an cagie’s
nest that they have discovered in
the Roche Point area of Deep
Cove.

It is situated in an area slated for
immediate development. It is
thought to be the only eagle’s nest
in the frequented area of North
Vancouver, and is certainly the on-
ly one that can be seen by us
without a wilderness trek.

portunity to thank you very much
for the News coverage our swim
club received during our season
from May I to Aug. 24.

You did an excellent jeb of prin-
ting these articles and the swim
meet results. Our swimmers were
very happy to see their ac-
complishments published.

North Vancouver District Coun-
cil, in its attempt to preserve the
nest, yet proceed with orderly
development, requested Hun-
tington to present an authoritative
distance which should be preserved
round the tree.

She took specialists in trees and
eagles to the site and came up with
the figure of 100 metres of preser-
vation as the absolute minimum if
the eagles were not to be
discouraged from nesting in the
tree.

Yet council ignored that figure

and voted only to delay develop-
ment on three lots and asked for a
report by the parks board with
regard to covenants to protect trees
on the other lots for development.
Council, therefore, in its middle-
of-the-road attitude, has virtually
condemned the nest.

The ecagie’s nest is a witness to
our unique and distinctive living
area on the North Shore. Too bad
that we once again have to drive
our wildlife away.
