8 - Sunday, October 4, 1987 - North Shore News Student volunteers thanked for good job Dear Editor: On behalf of the B.C. Associa- tion of Volunteer Centres, 1 would like to thank all students who spent time as a volunteer this summer. Students seldom get the public recognition they deserve for their participation in summer pro- READER ASKS, grams. If it were not for their effort and commitment, there are a great many programs that simply would not exist. Being a volunteer will continue to prove beneficial for students. The provincial government has “WHO'S NEXT?” volunteer Student introduced a its recently component in Assistance Program. In order to be eligible for non- repayable funding, a student must either work, study or volunteer during their pre-term break. Unemployment figures for young adults aged 18 to 26 remain consistently high — approximately 20 per cent are without work. It is a much needed opportunity for students to receive credit for their volunteer experience. In this way all students have an equal chance for financ*s] aid. Students can contact their local volunteer centre for more informa- tion regarding the volunteer com- ponent. Elizabeth Honsberger Volunteer Promotion Coordinator B.C. Association of Volunteer Centres Be on guard for expropriation LOOK! Dear Editor: Congratulations are in order to Bill Tomlinson with his timely warning re expropriation, publish- ed in the North Shore News Sept. 16th. | The ugly tentacles of expropria- tion are creeping into the North WV HOUSING Shore community. Whilst it may be too late for some who have already felt the heavy hand of local government using their power to seize property, we should be ever vigilant and on guard against these bullying tac- tics. Most citizens affected are in Seniors too important Dear Editor: I read in the North Shore News on Wednesday, Sept. 9 the objec- tions some neighbors have to 2 low income seniors housing project. It is unbelievable. One neighbor, a Mr. Carl Hunter, objects because he would lose one hour’s sunlight each day. How selfish can people get! Another neighbor feels it would decrease the value of her property. Such petty complaints. I am sure the long-time residents of West Vancouver who are now seniors are more important than one hour’s sunshine. Bridget Morgan West Vancouver Housing a question of bylaws Dear Editor: - One on for Doug Collins!! Regarding . United Church and local residents opposing that hous- ing project in their back yard. It’s not a question of ethics, selfishness or morality. It’s called bylaws and zoning regulations. This area in West Vancouver is zoned, and has been for many years, as. a ‘‘single-family zoned area.’’ Shall we rezone the rest of consecutive ins 2 and get the West Vancouver for all the ‘‘do gooders’’? As Collins stated: ‘‘It is all very well to tell someone else what to do if we would do it ourselves. But we don’t know whether we would do it ourselves unless we are faced with the same problem.”’ Tell it like it is, have a large one at the watering hole on me Doug!! Elaine J. Cia 86-6222 their retirement years, and Jess able to withstand the stress and trauma inflicted upon them, with the fear that they may be forced out of their homes for which they have worked long and hard to preserve. We, as law-abiding citizens, deserve the right to be left alone to enjoy our remaining years, without the constant threat of expropria- tion hanging over our heads. Once our council gets taste of expropriation mania we may truly ask ourselves who’s next? And can we afford it?
