AT 17, with the entrepreneurial
spirit and savvy of a man twice his
age, Neil Balter bade his parents
farewell and left his comfortable
San Fernando Valley home.

‘Now, 23,, Balter’s California
Close: Company is bringing in
earnings to the tune of $6 million.

They redesign jumbled closets
which most people ‘would rather
keep behind closed doors.

For about $300, a homeowner or
condo dweller gets a private con-
sutztion of about an hour with
one of the company’s trained
counselors. Then come custom
sketches for his or her new closet.

A few days later, expert
workmen securely fit a personal-
ized arrangement of shelves, long
and short hanging poles, drawers
and bins with ‘‘Balter-ized’’ in-
novations like pull out tie racks
and easy glide clothes poles. _ :

“Most people are used to
workers like the phone company’s
installers,’’ Balter expiains.

“Those guys come in, do their
job fine, but leave your place a
mess. My guys know they’ll hear
from me personally if they try
anything like that.’”

Roberta Balter smiles impishly.
“It’s not often you find a son and
father operation, instead of the
other way around.”

Mrs. Balter is operations man-
ager for the company’s corporate
office in Canoga Park, California.
Her husband, Jack, oversees sales

operations and trains new sales
people. Both are content to have

left their antique furniture business

and to have invested $15,000 to
help their younger son structure
the business he had up to then

his van on $1,000 in seed money
from a neighbor.

Production costs are kept down -

by the corporate office which
makes centralized discount pur-
chases of all supplies and equip-
ment for its franchises.
