‘Satisfying conversation’ FROM PAGE C1 titude Test) score of 1250 to get in. I had taken an American SAT test in 1981, and it suddenly struck me my score was higher than that. (It was 1260.) So I joined. Brais said one of the main reasons he likes Mensa is because of the opportunities for satisfying conversation. ‘‘The real drawing feature for Mensans is to find so- meone else to communicate with... You can really carry on a conversation with a Mensan, and the person will not lose track in the middle. ‘‘It’s not saying we’re in- telligence supermen, because we’re not... (But) the original ideas are just amazing. Many Mensans turn into original thinkers... They’re basically normal, but can suddenly turn to a train of thought that may be hard to follow, but ts fascinating.’’ Being extremely intelligent seems like an enormous ad- vantage (o most people. But Brais said being overly brainy has disadvantages as well. “Going through school is often very difficult for Men- sans... You always have pro- blems with friends. You’re often not an ‘A’ student, and you’re not popular... You’re sort of off the waill.’’ Mensa has members from all levels of society, said Brais. He said the Vancouver group has members who are “*truck drivers, jack-hammer operators, people who work in technical laboratories, and everything in between.”’ For those interested in joining Mensa, the Society offers intelhgence tests, for a fee, on a regular basis. For membership information in Vancouver, phone 738-2124. Brais, who is now taking computer science courses at Capilano College, says being a Mensan is a positive and rewarding experience. ‘“‘It’s an interesting association,’”’ he said. ‘*‘There’s a lot of good feel- ings about it — it’s like a fraternal bond.’’ Four day bookworm sale VANCOUVER PUBLIC Library’s Annual Book Sale will be held at the Central Branch — Robson and Bur- rard — from December | to 4.
