Cll - Sunday, June 5, 1983 - North Shore News THERE ARE many good reasons why more and more British Columbians are saying, “There’s no place like home” while planning this year’s vaca- uon. Gas is up. The dollar’s down. With a little planning, tightly budgeted B.C. residents discouraged from travelling to far-away destinations will find a wealth of new sights and ex- periences right in their home province. Already, British Colub- mians vacation within B.C.’s boundaries more than any other group of travellers. They are expanding their horizons to the province's every extremity - hiking, cycling, boating, rafting, auto or bus touring - without stretching budgets to the limit. The ocean, mountain and forest wilderness, and thousands of lakes are free to explore. Museums, parks, and historic sites across the pro- vince display inspinng rem- nants of our Pacific Nor- thwest coast native Indian heritage, and charge little or nothing for admission. Vestiges of our European heritage include the Parha- ment buildings in Victona, art galleries. pioneer museums, folkfests and fairs, paddie-wheelers and steam- ships, old farmhouses, highways and bridges. Tounsm B.C. Information Centres throughout the pro- vince display hundreds of brochures descnbing many such popular and inexpen- sive attractions. Other attractions are list. ed in the toumsm ministry's Calendar of Events along with thousands of events and activities like Loggers’ Sports Day in Port Alberni, tlk Days at Radium Hot Spr- megs. and Julyfest in Kimbericy A senes of circle tours and other features by the (ourism ministry appear frequently in newspapers and _ travel publications. For example, the 340 km “Lava Circle Tour” beginn- ing in Terrace takes travellers to Lava Lake, Ca- nyon City, Aiyansh, Dragon Lake and Kitwanga, the site of some of the world’s oldest standing totems. The “Saltspring Island Crafts Tour’ describes where to find some of B.C.’s most talented artists; and the “Sasquatch Drive” beginning in New Westminster leads to Agassiz-Harmison territory — heart of Sasquatch country. The Beautiful British Col- ubta magazine reveals, in four-color, some of the best places, while the official B.C. road map clearly in- dicates how to get there. Late summer or early fall, when the crowds have gone and the so-called “Off- season” begins, is a good time to take advantage of lower lodging and transportation rates. Camping — if you're not staying with relatives — is the most adventurous and least-expensive-type —holi- day. Some 370 provincial park campgrounds offer accom- modation ranging from $4 to $10 per might. Some camp- grounds are free, and from late September, though most sites are open, fees are not collected. A map outhning provin- cial campground locations and facilites is available from the ladds, parks, and housing ministry or Tourism B.C There are also five na- tonal parks in BC with a total of 12 campgrounds. Ever thought how much a “bargain” can cost you in the long run? The worst bargain is the one where the traveller buys something exotic that proves to be junk when he gets it home. High on the list of sucker's gold are the lovely gems unfolded from a piece of kleenex by a guy on the street. The only safe spot to buy gems, cut or uncut - set or loose, is from a reputable dealer. In Colombia, pedlars work the beach front hotels in jeans, sandals and T- shirts. They'll sell you anything from a genuine Indian carving to a bottle of Chivas (decanted Ist night from a bathtub) or some crackling green emeralds. The only relation to the real thing that any of the products have is in the mind of the buyer. BEWARE. holiday t $985 campgrounds, and some 2,000 motels, hotels, resorts and lodges. The Tourism B.C.
