Skiers’ access limited A CLASSIC battle is brewing on Cypress mountain. By t MMER On one side is Cypress Bowl Recreations Lid.. the licensee of the downhill skt area in Cypress Provincial Park. On the other side are wilderness cross-country skiers who use the park. An organization = repre- senting the wilderness skiers called Save Cypress Bowl Committee (SCBC) claim that Cypress Bowl Reere- ations (CBR) are using the police to stop cross-country wilderness skiers from hav- ing free access to the Hollyburn Ridge area of Cypress Park. According to Lynn von Krosigk of the SCBC the “skiers have no interest in using the groomed cross- country runs, but wish to continue to carry on off groomed trails." Krosigk states that CBR’s actions are contrary to the Criminal Code because the company is licensed only to charge access fees for groomed runs in a restricted area. “The police, however, have allowed themselves to be used by Cypress Recre- ation in three instances in laying, or threatening to lay, quite groundless criminal trespass charges against wilderness skiers in the park who are not using the trails groomed by the company.” ‘ she says. Von Krosigk contends that CBR’s actions are a ‘flagrant and most discriminatory -unconstitu- tional misuse of the police and criminal law to assis Cypress Recreations in a very deliberate and calculated severing off the whole of the Hollyburn Ridge side of the park as its private business preserve. “We gain the impression from the police that its ac- tions proceed from a mis- taken understanding of its, duty to provide police pro- tection to Cypress Recre- ations, because the company has a business licence and a special agreement with the rounicipality,’' she says. A delegation from SCBC attended West Vancouve Council’s regular meeting Monday to make council aware of the problems cross-country skiers face at Cypress. The committee wanted council to insist that CBR conform to its permit and stop interfering with public access to the park. The group also called for council to instruct the police not to misuse their power. Mayor Derrick Hum- phreys said that if there was a dispute over the land, the matter Jay with the provin- cial government, since it controls the park. Woot was a case oof trespassing, the matter lay it the hands of the civil courts, he said. WARNING. Health and Welfare Canada adwses that danger to health, ser Ay per ciparette B&H King Size.
