a, ee eT B2 - Sunday, February 20, 1983 - North Shore News In this issue, Vancouver Whuecap coach John Giles explains what he considers to be his prime role as coach. It’s a simple role, and one which can be utilized by coaches at all levels of the game. By JOHN GILES As a professional coach, | see my role as a motivator of the players. Although, in one sense, that’s not exactly correct. Players must be able to motivate themselves or they won't be in the professional leagues. As a coach, I can keep them going in the right direcuon. I can be _ the “person who helps them to believe in themselves, their individual skills, abilities and their collective skills as a team. And that's something that all coaches should be doing regardless of the level - encouraging their players. There are times when things fall apart and nothing goes the right way, par- ticularly the ball. Think back to last season and remember when we went to play the Timbers in Portland and were thrashed 5-0. After that game, the key for me was to get the players to forget it as quickly as possible and to start plan- ning ahead. It was essential that they not lose confidence in themselves. And really, when you look at it carefully, you realize that a good team doesn’t become bad overnight. Oh certainly, they can have a bad game or two, but not become in- stantly and totally bad. One other job of the coach is that of making sure the proper discipline is established and that all players have the proper committment. All prefessional players have all these things firmly established in their players deserve credit for the way they had to keep changing and adapting all season long. Taking the skills the players have and molding them into an effective attack is a coach's function. But let's make it clear right now that it is not my function to teach skills. No coach at this level can teach a player when to pass, when to shoot, when to do some off-the-ball running. Hf he doesn’t know, then he won't be in uniform. What the coach has to do ‘© 7 ZZ NCIS WITH THE CAPS Learning to motivate FAMILY FUN AT FOREST HILLS The Forest Hills baseball season is about to begin. But the key essential for the coach is to make sure that each player, with all these attributes, has them working in co-operation with all the other players on the team. They have to realize that while they are all in- dividuats, they are still part of the team and their in- dividual skills are to the benefit of the whole team. Last year we ran into a lot of injuries. In fact, when people sometimes criticize the team for not doing better they should realize that out of 32 games we were only able-to field the same hneup three trmes. A total of 29 games were played with different lineups, and the is build an attack around the / skills that are already there. Not to come in with a pre- conceived idea. Of course that means making sure you have the right biend of skills on the field to start with. All players and coaches are natural competitors and in that sense it’s not hard to motivate them to. win. Players love to play and coaches love to coach. That’s why we're all here. After many years in the game, I've been quite successful. I] want to be here and I want to see this team win Soccer Bowl. That's the motivation | have, and it’s the motivation the team has. We just have to put it all together. Industrial league standings The Playoffs have still no determined match-ups as yet in the immensely close N.S. Industrial Hockey League.
