i fashion It was a sparkling 33 carat citron diamond, and _ it graced the aristrocratic neck of the beauteous Empress Carlotta of Mexico, but, like her husband who gave her the jewel, the diamond was to come to no good end, reports the Jewelry Industry Council. The story begins in 1850, when Maximilian, brother of Franz Joseph of Austria, visited Brazil and bought two gems, one a 42 carat dazzler, and the other the citron wife Carlotta, daughter of Leopold I of Belgium to Mexico. In 1864, he set up a lavish lifestyle in a sumptu- ous Spanish colonial castle in Chapultepec. The Mexican ulace soon became appalled at his spendthrift ways. During the first six months of his reign he gave more than 20 banquets, 16 balls, 12 recep- tions and 70 tuncheons. His wine bill alone was over $100,000. Enraged Mexicans seized Diamond lost in dust her medical bills. In 1919, a Chicago jeweler displayed it at the World’s Fair. The Carlotta diamond disappeared after the exe- cution, only to turn up again in 1901 when two Mexicans tried to smuggle it into the United States. Seized by Customs, it was auctioned off to a New York jeweler, Morris Nelkin in 1946. In possession of the Nelkin family for 15 years, the Maximilian bad luck finally overtook it.
