Universally recognized as one of the most imnovative coaches in hockey today, Roger Neilson signed on as head coach Harry Neale’s associate, June 8, 1981 during the annual NHL congress in Montreal. The 48-year-old native of Toronto joins the Canncks after posting a 575 winning percentage as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres, spending two seasons with each club. His NHL coaching record stands at 128 wins, 88 losses and 50 ties in 266 regular- season games. After playing minor hockey in the Toronto area, Neilson joined the OHA Peterborough Petes as a scout in the late 1960s. He was soon elevated to coach and, during the next 10 seasons, guided Petes teams that never finished lower than third place and won one OHA championship. His dedication and success eventually led him into pro hockey in 1976-77 with Dallas of the Central League, then a farm club of Toronto. After finishing with a 35-23-16 record that first season, he was named coach of the parent Maple Leafs in the fal of 1977. He left Toronto in 1979 to join the Baffalo Sabres as an assistant to Scotty Bowman and was promoted to head coach at the start of 1980-81. The newest member of the Vancouver Canucks’ coaching staff is 37-year-old Ron Smith, a native of Galt, Ont., and longtime associate of Roger Neilson. Maple Leafs and was his assistant coach in Buffalo last season. Smith coached the Guelph (Ont.) juniors from 1975 to 1978 and also guided the York University hockey team during the 1978-79 campaign.
