SS mailbox Leave Ridge alone Dear Editor: The authorities in control of Holtyburn Ridge, namely, Greater Vancouver Regional District and West Vancouver Council, have been holding the 1200 foot level against any further development. West Van- couver Council is planning to phase out all building and reserve Hollyburn Ridge for park land. However, we again have an applicant trying to invade the reserved territory with “modest plans” of limited development above this level. Mr. Rodgers is acting on behalf of some lot owners, namely, Hollyburn Hill Property Owners Association. He also wants the water rights from several streams. It is difficult to find suitable words to express reaction to these proposals. Surely we have learned by this time what happens when a foothold has been gained in any enterprise like this. Witness the waterfront of West Vancouver where builders were allowed to build all along the shoreline. We would not have Stanley Park today had not Disaster fund needed Dear Editor: The News recently was filled with stories covering the Washington D.C. plane . disaster. Particularly highlighted have been the | selfless efforts of rescuers, one of whom died so that a crash victim could be saved. Another man dived in to save a woman who had just gone under. North Vancouver too has its recent disaster victims but unfortunately a helping hand has not been forwarded. I refer to the citizens recently devastated by flooding. In an effort to extend the hand of the community to the flood victims, Alderman Crist moved a motion at a meeting of District council to set up a Natural Disaster Compensaton Fund. But unlike the hero who jumped in to save the drowning woman the rest of council couldn't even second the motion. Instead Alderman Baker || FRESH SHRIMP MEAT 5.9918.|| chose to accuse Crist of headline grabbing and said she disagreed with the $100,000 proposed allotment to the fund. Tm only glad that the drowning air crash victim had not been waiting for Alderman Baker to save her. I sincerely hope, for the good of our whole com- munity, that council changes its direction on the Disaster Fund and lives up to the North Vancouver tradition of helping our neighbours in need. The Ridge is described as Vancouver's “most beautiful feature”. We have and will have somebody, who will be here today and = gone tomorrow, who will desecrate our natural heritage in the name of progress and material gain. The Ridge must be main- tained above the 1200 foot level for the perpetual use of the present and _ future generations. If the GVRD or present council are considering any plan other than to leave Hollyburn Ridge alone for park purposes, then I suggest they had better think again. If there are any “shenanigans” going On, as Mr. Vander Zalm is reported to imply, then I would suspect that it would be by the developers. P.E.
