Radical mastectomies are now performed in only about 15 per cent of the cases, Dr. William Wood, medical director of the Cox Cancer Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, said. Seven and a half years ago, however, mastectomies were performed about half the time. They still are the prevalent form of treatment in Europe, he said. Researchers in Milan selected 349 patients who underwent radical mastectomy — removal of the breast, underlying chest muscle ‘and lymph nodes under the arms — in 1973. They also followed 352 women who underwent the more conservative treatment of quadrantectomy — removal of only the quarter of the breast affected by cancer — plus dissection of the lymph nodes under the arms.
