The barometer was ~ down, the’ sky looked leaden and overcast, and ’ the. wind was. tugging up small waves around us.” The weather synopsis was that a'westeriy in-flow. of air from a high pressure area off:the west coast of. Vancouver Asland had escalated and the forecaster went on to issue.a small craft warning. 7 He talked about winds of thirty to forty knots : from e south west. ‘The iong fjord we were in was led more to the south east than the south west, but nevertlic l¢ss thirty to forty -knot winds were no smal matter, even with us secu to a mooring buoy. ve \ BE PREPARED |. : i ee I woke the mate and we spent an hour going over the vessel and -— checking everything out. We put the mainsail up and tied a reef in it and then put it down again, rigged an extra mooring line. - ‘to the float and double- checked the chafing gear. We took the African Queen off and stowed it, and then I motored with the dinghy into 7 north shore 1139 Lonsdale Avenue. North OFFICE/INEWS (604) 980-0511. The marina was crowded with vessels of all's Sizes and.I decided that the best course of action was to tough it out at the mooring buoy. The ' hotel assured me there were | 4,000 pound anchors at the - other end of the mooring lines. We had breakfast, and then | left to attend the last seminar sessions. I kept an anxious eye on the weather, peering out of the window at every opportunity to see what was happening. This was the last, day, and the meetings wert over at noon. By that time the bad weather had not materialized as expected. It was a bright, sunny day, and the wind was about ten knots - ideal sailing weather. } NEW CREW We took out some) people including young childret: to go Sailing in the afternoon. It was rather funny, for none of them had been sailing before and when we towed them out to the sailing vessel in our tiny dinghy they all looked somewhat apprehensive _ rather pale and anxious But the day was a tremendous success. We bungled the sail away from the buoy by trying to sail over the painter connecting the dinghy to the buoy but after we cleared it and began tacking down East Sound Sound, with the sails wing « on wing and the wind from the stern. a r LOST AT SEA One of the boys lost his hat while working. with me on the fore deck.. A jib sheet ’ flipped. it off and it floated_<~ away behind us. A red sloop from Seattle running along ‘behind us picked it up out of the water with a boat hook and transferred it. back _to __our boat. The boy was very pleased to get his hat back, ‘and the incident ended happily.” The sloop then put up her spinnaker and began to pull © - away -from us. My junior _-Might even catch up, but the . things improved == every A FUN TIME Three-year-old got excited that we were leaving the dinghies behind. I took the other kids out on the deck with me and began. in- troducing them to the work part of sailing. They entered into the spirit of things immediately and I must say that they were a Ying eager, and energetic crew. It was fun working with them. By the time we tacked down East Sound to Olga, at the southeast end, the boys were right in tune with what was necessary. Ages cight, 10, and 13, they learn¢d fast and paid attention. It was a glorious day - not too hot, the wind stgady and far. We tumed |in the harbour at Olga ‘and began the run back up! to the northwest end of East crew wasn't about to take this lying down. Soon we were flying every piece of sail that we could. For a few minutes it looked like we sloop was very light and began to draw steadily . ahead, until it was far down the sound. MAGIC DAYS* It was one of those magic days when it seems that everyone enjoys themselves. The boys, along with their father and I did the deck work; Kim steered, Bob tended the bar and admired our technique, Suzette sunbathed, - laughed, and washed dishes, Mary made the sandwiches and everyone had a fine time. By now we were at the harbour at the other end of the sound. The wind was brisk and when we came around to begin the tacks back to Rosano the junior crew flew at the winches with a will. The 13-year-old operated the winch handle, 10-year-old tailed, cight- year-old freed the jib sheets and scampered around in the cockpit coiling up lines. ANOTHER MISS .At.Rosario we tried to fetch the .mooring buoy ° under sail but missed - as usual. ~The first time I calculated we couldn't hold it as we had too much way on and we didn't even try. We made fast to it after a few tries and some laughter, and then the sails came down and the vessel hung tethered again. We ‘dressed ship’ with sail covers and awnings, and then all retired below to the salon for a drink. Gone were the pale, anxious crew that we took aboard = inthe morning in their places sat a sunbumed, happy bunch full of fresh air and adventure. The kids were full of excitement, which they vented by paddling the dinghy furiously around and around the vessel. Altogether, a warm, happy and sunny day, enjoyed by all.
