had a number of younger clients
suffering from debilitating, some-
times fatal, diseases.

do personal-care, Laburda says she
does a fair amount of work with
dying people, and although it can

The homemaker program was
originally sponsored in 1963 by the
Victorian Order of Nurses. The
homemzker program was subsidiz-
ed by the Ministry of Health in
1978, with the advent of the pro-
vincial ministry's Long Term Care
program; and in 1981. became. a
Separate society from the VON.

The non-profit agency currently
provides services to over 1,600
North Shore clients per month, has
an office staff of 2i and employs

250 homemakers.

Glad Ledingham, a North Shore
Home Support Services Society
supervisor, says the agency is cur-
rently looking for other women in-
terested in becoming homemakers.

“We're looking for women who
perhaps don’t think they have a
raarketable skill,’’ she said.

Ledingham noted that some
women wanting to re-enter the
workforce after bringing up a fam-
ily “‘can’t just pop into an office
because everything is computeriz-
ed,”” so are often pleased to
discover that their homemaking
skills can be put to good use in a
