By KIM PEMBERTON | News Reporter In North Vancouver 19 businesses were subjected to either an actual break-in and theft or an attempted break-in. In West Van- couver there were 25 break-ins. The majority of businesses hit in North Vancouver were along Lonsdale Avenue, between 13th and 20th Streets, and the 1000 to 1200 block of Marine Drive. In West Vancouver the businesses were along Marine Drive, in the Ambleside and Dun- darave areas. West Vancouver spokesman Cst. Dave Bingham said in most cases entry was gained by thieves prying the door or using a pipe wrench to force the lock. And, he said, the “cash float’? was the target in the majority of break-ins. He said residents should call police if they see any suspicious activity. “The number of high-rise apartments which line Marine Drive should afford a natural pro- tection to the area,’’ said Bingham. RCMP Cst. Cliff Doherty said in North Vancouver the thieves gained entry by prying off the stores’ dead bolt lock mechanisms. In North Vancouver the loss of merchandise is estimated at $15,000. “It's recommended merchants examine their lock mechanisms and consider contacting a lock- smith if they feel what they have now is inadequate,” he said.
