Vo further that process for the 1999) municipal council and schoo! board race, the News presents Soapbox, an untitered smattering, or unso- licited fulmination, sentiment and personal conviction. eee Russ Fraser, candidate for mayor of West Vancouver in the November 20 civic elec- tion, stated today “Ir is about time for us to be up-front con- cerning compensation for councillors and the mayor of West Vancouver. Usually this subject is confined to deep dark _ back rooms during an clection and dealt with after, but the taxpayers deserve better. | am stating my position now.” Ar present the six West Vancouver councillors each receive a stipend of $17,000 per year, plus $2,000 for rotat- ing responsibilities as acting mayor. Fraser said, “No legiti- mate candidate seeks a position on West Vancouver council for the money. It is a time-con- suming job. However, West Vancouver needs the very best SOAPBOX G9 people in what is becoming a complicated and demanding assignment. I believe council- lors should receive 40% of what the mayor earns. The mayor's salary should be based on rec- ommendations at the begin- ning of cach three-year term, as submitted to council by a non- partisan com: mittee of citi- zens.” At the current rate of mayor's pay, the above guide- line would mean an approxi- mately $3,000 raise in salory for incoming councillors. Fraser aiso indicated that it was his intention to devote full time to the mayor’s job if elected. He also stated that, “The cur- rent level of compensation for the mayor’s $ position is accept- able to me.” If you are a candidate and you wish ta participate, fax ‘Soapbox contributions to 985- 2104 or send vin e-mail to .
