Producing this mach- anticipated drama about lite op a ranch in northern B.C. is only one of the tasks jug: gled by Milestone’s Oxden Gavanski and Catherine Forbes. The North Vancouver couple have several projects in development alongside Cowboy, and when they're hot oversecing a burgeoning film production business, they're raising their four children in a house ten min- utes away from the studio. Gavanski, who is presi- dent and head of production at Milestone, and Forbes, who heads up development for the company, first met in 1994 on the set of a com- mercial for Dairyland. Gavanski was producing the commercial. His tuture wife — a model and actress at the time was in front of the camera, “running around i in a field full of cows.” The joint promotion of milk products quickly became a joint venture in the film industry. Forbes — who once modelled for the News’ own fashion pages — was looking for a career change. “IT didn't want (modelling or acting) badly enough,” she says. “It’s fiercely com- petitive. Unless you really want it, there’s someone else who wants it more.” Forbes began to work behind the camera by script- editing for Gavanski. “She’d send me these wonderful little notes (on the scripts),” smiles Ogden. “Eventually I suggested to her that she try doing some writing.” The pair set up Milestone Productions in 1996, and have been sole partners in the company since 1997, Asa result, they are now able to develop and produce projects of their own choos- ing, rather than having to rely on outside companies for employment. -In the works at the moment are a host of differ- ent projects, including White Castles, a sort of Mary Poppins for the °90s. it tells the story of a lonely child and her somewhat unusual nanny.
