Candies, sepecially choco-

late, can be very dangerous
for pets.

If you suspect your pet has
eaten chocolate or any other
treat that is causing discom-
fort, consult your veterinarian
immediately.

Loaded with a naiurally
occurring alkaloid called
theobromine, chocolate can
cause vomiting, restlessness,
heart disturbances and even
death to a pet.

The Iethal dose of theo-
bromine depends on the size
of the dog and the type of
chocolate.

Ounce for ounce, baking
chocolate has six to nine
times as much theobromine
as milk chocolate.

Estimates of the smallest
amount that can be fatal are:

® four to 10 ounces of milk
chocolate or one-half to one
ounce of baking chocolate for
small dogs such as
Chihuahuas and toy poodles;
@ one to 1.5 pounds of milk
chocolate or two to three
ounces of baking chocolate
for medium sized dogs such

_as cocker spaniels and dachs-

@ two to 4.5 pounds of milk
