NORTH VANCOUVER CITY SOUNCIL By Bob Mackin Subdject to finalization of financ- ing, the former Pacific Great Eastern (PGE) railway station will be returned from Mahon Park to its former location at Lonsdale Quay near the Seven Seas ficating restau- rant’s parking. The move could happen as early as this spring. A vintage streetcar being stored at Mahon Park may be displayed nearby. The North Vancouver Museum and Archives will be responsible for managing the building and its pro- gramming. However, at least 40% of programming time must be for non-museum community use. The first phase budget is estimat- ed at $86,670, while phase two will be slighdly larger at $90,000. ‘Phase three has been referred to the finance committee and is the most expensive at $250,000. It will cost about $100,000 for the option- al phase four, which involves the streetcar relocation. ; Additionally, the city will lose as much as $50,000 a year in parking Ttevenue since the current parking plaza will be converted to pedestri- an use. Funding for various phases of the project will come from the city’s tax sale lands fund, BC Rail (PGE’s successor), Kiwanis, and the provincial government's BC 21 community infrastructure fund. The building frames an interesting courtyard to the west which integrates the library with the shopping centre to the south. The incorporation of heavy timbered elements both on the exterior and the interior and the careful attention to detai! creates a strong and exciting public build- ing.” Architect: Downs/Archambault & Partners.
