THE scent of barbecued chicken satays permeated the air as a cheery voice announced surprise super sales on designer clothes over the loudspeaker. The Memorial Recreation Centre was bustling. Amid a sea of frenzied bargain hunters, one could spot the masses across the room purchasing draw tickets in the hopes of winning a beautiful gift basket, brand new gas grill or Oster bread maker. ‘ This was no ordinary garage sale. Several months prior to the event, realtor volunteers went through the community to collect clothing, housewares, books and other items for the sale. They also solicited a myriad of prizes and gift certificates to draw trom 46 loca) merchants. Founded in 1979, the SAGE Transition House offers emer- gency shelter for more than 3,500 women and children fleeing abusive family situations.
