Determining the tire b

First, determine the size of tire
you need. A good starting point is
your vehicte’s owner’s manual.
What tire size is recommended for
your var by the manufacturer?
The tires on your vehicle now may
stot be the same size as the origi-
nal tires. You may eventually
choose another tire size, but the
manufacturer’s suggested tire size
gives you a point to start from.

Next, you'll need to know how
to interpret tire dimensions. The
numbers on the sidewall! of a tire,
such as P215/65HR-15, refer to
the height and width of the tire,
and size of wheel. Using this ex-
ample, the first letter, P, stands

measured in millimetres. This can
range from 145 for a small, skinny
economy-car tireto 315 fora
wide, high performance tire.

The number 65 is the percentage
of the height of the sidewall (the
distance from the rim to the top
of the tread) to the width of the
tire. Passenger car tires are gener-
ally 65- or 70-series while perfor-
mutnce tires range from 60- to
45-series..Generally, the larger the
number, the taller and narrower
the tire. ;

The letter H refers to the speed
rating or performance rating of
the tire. This system, developed in
Europe, grades tires based on a
maxirnum speed at which they can.

Speed ratings are also an in-
dication of a tire’s grip, handling,
road feel, and safety. Z-rated
tires, for example, use a superior
tread compound that won’t heat
up as easily, and different types of
steel and belt construction for im-
proved road-holding.

R refers to the fact that it is a
radial tire. Compared to tradi-
tional bias-ply or bias-belted tires,
radials offer superior durability,
directional stability and less rolling
resistance, All new cars are now
fitted with radial-ply tires as
standard equipment.

The number 15 stands for the
diameter of the wheel on which
the tire is mounted. Generally,
small cars have 12-, !3- or 14-
inch tires, while larger cars have
15-, 16-, or even 17-inch wheels.

Asa general rule, tires with a
high sidewall (such as P195/
70SR-14) offer a softer ride and
average handling characteristics.
Tires with a lower profile (P235/
50VR-16, for example) offer bet-
ter handling and grip, at the ex-
pense of ride.

However, tire size isn’t the only
factor determining ride and hand-
ling. Tires for the typical family
car have harder rubber com-

tires have softer tread compounds
that stick to the road better, but

There is a way of measuring a
tire’s projected longevity. A tire’s
ability to withstand wear is
measured On a scale called the
UTQG (Uniform Tire Quotient
Grading) index. A tire with a rat-
ing of 500 can be expected to go
twice as many kilometres as a tire
with a 250 rating. Generally, all-
season radials have a UTQG rat-
ing of between 300 and 500.
