His enthusiasm for their trip dissolves into bewilderment. She leaves the car. He is despondent, asking himself why she left. Was it something he said? Didn't say? Should have said? (At this point, the audience discovers the reason. It’s simply that she wanted to trade her Diet 7-Up for a Diet Sprite.) The train starts to pull away. What follows is her frantic bid to get back on board. She clings to the outside, crawls over the top and dives, just in time, to avoid a low tunnel. Twelve Angry Men **** (MGM/ UA Home Video) Unrated Screen size doesn’t limit this high-powered drama. It sprang trom the golden age of television to the big screen, featuring Henry Fonda and eleven great character actors (including a young Jack Klugman, Ed Begley and E.G. Marshall). They are jury members deliberating a seemingly open- and-shut murder case. Fonda’s solitary vote of not guilty turns up the heat on what is already the hottest day of the year. Every aspect of the film adds to the tension — the claustrophobic room, the brewing storm outside, the growing sweat stains on their shirts. Fonda also produced the film under gruelling conditions and a miniscule budget. Although it ranked with Grapes of Wrath and Ox-Bow Incident as his per- sonal favorites, it failed at the American box-office. For the rest of his career, he remained in front of the camera.
