Nurses to receive 20.9
per cent wage increase

Wage increases and contract
length, the two major outstanding
issues in contract negotiations be-
tween the Health Labour Relations
Association and the B.C. Nurses’
Union, were settled late last week
through mediator Vince Ready’s
binding arbitration.

Ready recommended a two-year

contract, running from April 1,
1989 to March 30, 1991, with a
total compounded wage increase
for nurses of 20.9 per cent.

Immediate increase for nurses is
12.89 per cent.

The hourly wage rate for a start-
ing eencral duty nurse will go from
the current $15.07 to $18.23, while
the hourly rate for 2 general duty
Nurse at the top of the six-step

scale will go from $17.43 to $21.08
by the end of the contract.

Both sides agreed to accept
binding arbitration in wage and
contract length following the Aug.
8 resumption of contract negotia-
tions.

The two-year deal will cost the
provincial health care industry an
additional $151.23 million over the
term of the contract.
