Solar eclipse expected Tuesday| NORTH Shore residents and residents around the Lower Maintand will have an opportunity to observe a paitial eclipse of the sun ear- ly Tuesday, March 7. The partial eclipse, which occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth and casts part of its shadow on the earth. will begin at 9 a.m. By 10:12 a.m. the moon will be hiding about 58 per cent of the sun from North Shore view. The eclipse will end at approximately 11:16 a.m. Observance of any solar eclipse must be done safely. Planetari- um officials advise that people should never look directly at the sun, especially with optical aids such as binoculars or telescopes unless the aids are properly filtered. Planetarium & Gordon Southam Observatory at 736-4431 or 738-2855, Trial set for businessman A MARCH 20 trial date has been set in North Vancouver provin- ciat court for a Vancouver businessman charged with one count of operating a business in North Vancouver City without a licence. Hugo Hector Rousseau, who is wanted in the United States on fraud charges, was originally charged in connection with incidents alleged to have occurred between Sept. 2 and 7, 1988 in which one of his refrigerator and appliance repair companies was alleged to have contravened municipal bylaws by doing work in the city without holding a valid city business licence. Man jailed for driving offence A 28-yesr-old North Vancouver man was sentenced to seven days in jail and fined $300 after driving a motor vehicle on Nov. 13, 1988 while prohibited. Paul Craig Joseph received the sentence from Judge J.K. Shaw after pleading guilty to the charge in North Vancuuver provincial court on Feb. 22. NV man fined for illegal suite A NORTH Vancouver man was fined §450 Monday in North Van- couver provincial court after he pleaded guilty to two violations of North Vancouver City’s egal suite bylaw. Serfio Alesandro Gonzo was originally charged with using an East 17th Street building as a two-family residence in a single- family zoned area from Jan. 10, 1988 to Aug. 25, 1988 and per- mitting a basement suite to be used in the building in connection with an Aug. 24, 1988 incident. The conviction is part of a series of illegal suite prosecutions currently being pursued by North Vancouver City officials. Mian fined for stoien property A 27-YEAR-OLD man of no fixed address was fined a total of $600 Monday after he pleaded guilty to possession of stolen prop- erty and operating a vehicle without valid insurance. Kurt Alexander Glode was originally charged in connection with Tov. 21, 1988 incidents in which two stolen licence plates were seized and a 1974 Malibu was driven near Mahon Avenue and 24th Street without insurance. Glode was fined $250 on the possession of stolen property charge and &250 on the charge of driving without valid insurance. 5 - Friday. March 3, 1989 —- North Shore News Canyon land conveyed to park APPROXIMATELY one acre of land from the 83-unit apartment complex being developed at the former Canyon Gardens Restau- rant site will be turned over to the Greater Vancouver Regional District for addition to the Capilano River regional park. The property, which extends one foot out from the river bank to the centre of the river, runs along the entire length of the development. Conveyance of the land was made a condition of the subdivi- sion project and will protect park views and river-bed areas.
