Bill Fowle, who manages a CD and
record rental store.

“The idea is to put low-cost
digital sound into the market and
the CD3 is ideal. It is small, very
portable, with the same quality as
full size discs, and has enough
room for up to 20 minutes of
music.”

With the recent release of the
new CD3s, various record labels
are using the technology different-
ly, giving consumers a variety of
recordings.

Some labels release CD3 singles
with two songs on a disc, the
equivalent of the vinyl 45. Others
use CD3 for remixed dance ver-
sions of songs — called CD3 maxi
singles, which are like 12-inch
singles,

Still other labels release CD3
mini LPs, which are used for
compilations and samplers of
special recordings.

Although there are only 20 to 30
titles available in Canada, this
format of compact disc has only
been around for a’ month, and the
list of releases to come over the
Christmas season is extensive.

There are already over 200 CD3s
available in the United States, and
they are expected to soon come to
Canada. Their $4 to $6 price
makes them an affordable alter-
native to the full-size disc.

Depending on the CD player, an
adapter ring may be necessary
where the CD3 snaps into the ring
so that it fits in the player; the
adaptor is re-usable — although
many are fragile and cost approx-
imately $1.50 to $2.50.

Some of the more lucky people
who have just purchased a CD
player-may have a machine that
does not need an adaptor, or it
comes with one.

“Almost all of the new CD
players on the market are CD3
ready,” explained Fowle. ‘‘When
you are buying a player make sure
yours has it.’
