THE NORTH Shore Indians Ban- tam ‘'B”’ lacrosse team added to its B.C. Summer Game silver medal recently with victory in the provin- cial championships. Playing in Killarney July 25 to 27, the team edged Mission 11-9 in the finat game of the five-team championships. In the the B.C. Summer Games, the team, made up of 13 and 14- year-old boys, recovered from its opening round loss to Abbotsford to win three straight games — two over Kitimat and a rematch victory over Abbotsford — to advance to the gold medal mutch against Saanich. The powerful Vancouve- Island team dropped the North Shore squad 18-4 in the final game to win the event's gold medal. The North Shore Indians went through their regular season play undefeated, posting 21 wins and one tie. The games were held in Cran- brook, B.C. July 10 to 13. Athletes from the North Shore were Cal Brandolini, Lorraine McLatchie and William Skuse, who belong to the North Shore Special Olympics, and Warren Callin, who plays for the Burnaby Special Olympics. Callin and Skuse were members of the B.C. soccer team that miss- ed a bronze by one point in the final medal round. Brandolini, competing in track and field, brought home a silver in the 200-metre and a bronze in the 400, while McLatchie sported three bronzes from the 100 and 200 metre races and the long jump. All four athletes are active in Special Olympics programs. PROGRAMS OFFERED North Shore Special Olympics offers (in season) on-going pro- grams in track and field, swimm- ing, softball, soccer, floor hockey (A and B levels) and bowling. Callin, McLatchie and Skuse are students at Windsor Secondary School where Brandolini graduated a year ago. The five-day schedule was top- ped off with a rousing chuck wagon barbecue in the corral of the Calgary Stampede. The four North Shore sports en- thusiasts agreed the barbecue was the highlight of the event. *“*Now all we need is cowboy boots,”’ cracked Brandolini. There were 53 participants from B.C. Expenses were fully sub- sidized by fund-raising efforts of the Motor Dealers Association of B.C., B.C. Spectal Olympics (BCSO) and the Special Olympic executive Board, explained Dan Howe, executive director of BCSO. SERIOUS TRAINING - Howe, who attended the games with program coordinator Wayne Hadley, said that athletes are carefully selected by consulting coaches and clubs. Criteria include evidence of hard, serious training, dedication, sportsmanship and appropriate social skills. A soccer program is now begin- ning in North Vancouver.
