CAMERA, RECORDER COMBINED

New gadget for home entertaining

EVERYONE knows that
home video cassette recorders
are as common as raindrops
What's new iw a. whole
generation of hardware that
is designed to plug mght in

Camera butts, for exam-
ple. have more to choose
from now than ever before
From the new tiny cameras
by Hitach, RCA, and JVC
to the illustrious Canon
VO30A. Goot-proot teatures
such as power zoom and auto
white balancing make the 3
pound solid state units ideal
for a casual user. But the
discerning buff may actually
prefer a large tube model like
the Canon. It has the added
bonus of a built-in key board
for special effects like titling
and coloring.

But the real innovation 1s
sul the camcorder - a com-
bined camera’recorder unit
available in both VHS (JVC,
Zenith) and the rival Beta
format (Sony, Toshiba,
Sanvo)

Both machines are teature
laden, though in 1988, Sony's
new BetaMovie unit will have

a handy auto tocus teature
By turning it on, the user
automatically focuses the
camera But the JVC Video-
movie has the advantage of

on site viewing With the
playback control in the
camera, you can actually

view What you've just shot by
looking through the
finder

As tor the ever popular
VCR, don't look tor any big
improvements over last
year’s models JVC's new
high fidehty unit is stall state
of the artin VHS and a close
rival to Sony's Beta SI 2700
Hi Fi model. In addition to
immaculate sound, both
units feature an array of
stunning editing features

With the SL 2700, for ex-
ample, you can scan and
mark your best shots elec-
tronically and play them back
in sequence later. It can also
““dub"™ the shots to a master
tape with great accuracy. The
JVC model, however, allows
“‘insert’’ editing, a profes-
sional method of dumping
select shots into the midst of
your other footage.
